Plea in HC for permission to hold jallikattu

A petition was filed on Wednesday in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking to quash an order of district collector that the permission for holding jallikattu (taming of bull) next month at Avaniapuram in this district would be given only after getting fresh orders from the high court.

Petitioner A K Kannan, president, Jallikattu Vizha Committee, Avaniapuram where the jallikattu is held in connection with the Pongal festival on 14 January, submitted the High court had already permitted conduct of the sport last year with a direction to strictly comply with the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals Act and Tamilnadu Regulation of Jallikattu Act.

However, the Collector, quoting an order from the Director of Animal Husbandary, had said that fresh orders should be obtained from the high court this year also.
