Physical education students at a disadvantage in DU

The students who have studied physical education as an academic subject, may be at disadvantage. Some colleges in University of Delhi (DU) are not considering Physical education as a subject in best four. ‘We don’t consider physical education in best four for courses like maths, economics and psychology. Admission are done on the basis of process of elimination. We can’t admit everybody. So, we set out an eligibility criteria. Also, according to guidelines given by DU, subjects related with the course should be considered,’ said Babli Moitra Saraf, principal, Indraprastha College (IP) Women, DU. In IP College, students taking admission in mathematics, psychology or economics wont be able to add physical education in their best four.

‘Physical education is a scoring subject. That’s why, students opt for it in class 12th. If we can take it in our best four, then what’s the point,’ said an aspirant. Even in Bharati College, DU, physical education students would face disadvantage. ‘Every college decides its criteria independently. Some colleges in DU might have taken physical education in best four, but in our college is not so for some courses. In courses like B. Com (Hons), maths , economics we are not considering physical education in best four,’ said a professor, Bharati College, DU.

Continuing on the same line, Satyawati College in DU has also barred physical education subject from best four. ‘We don’t take physical education in best four except for BA. Programme. It was decided by colleges’ committee. Only one vocational course is to be included and so, we have decided not to consider physical education for any of the honours courses. This criteria may depend from college to college,’ Satender Kumar Joshi, principal, Satyawati College, Delhi University.
