PC wants UK to send Lalit Modi back to India

In a new twist to the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) drama, Union finance minister P Chidambaram has raised the issue of former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi’s presence in London with his British counterpart. According to reports, Chidambaram has asked the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne how a fugitive like Modi was staying in London.

The  I-T department opened a case against Modi almost two and half years ago and was investigating tax evasion and money laundering to the tune of Rs 700 crore. The investigating wing of the Income Tax department, after opening Modi’s case, had sought permission of interrogating him in London almost two and a half years ago. But the request was turned down by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) as well as the law ministry and the Enforcement Directorate.

Chidambaram also enquired of his British counterpart as to why UK was not taking any action against Lalit Modi despite his passport being impounded and his UK visa having run out. However, the UK is of the opinion that the former IPL commissioner has challenged denial of visa in a British court and that India has not put in a formal request for his extradition.
