Pay Rs 1,264 cr dues, Chandolia tells govt

Standing Committee chairman of North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) Yogender Chandolia has alleged step motherly treatment by Delhi government and demanded to release Rs 1,264 crore at the earliest.

‘The Delhi government has been creating hurdles before municipal corporations of Delhi which is a clear violation of 74th amendment of the Constitution. They are not releasing our rightful share in the taxes what they had promised from time to time,’ said Chandolia while presenting his first budget in the house on Thursday.

‘The government gives us loan on 9.5 per cent to 13.5 per cent interest for providing civic amenities to people which is unfair as civic services are not profitable business,’ Chandolia further added. During the budget presentation he calculated Rs 3,327.61 crore outstanding of the three municipal corporations with Delhi government and demanded 38 per cent share of the NDMC. He also demanded an additional Rs 6.64 crore for expending on maintenance of 60 feet wide roads which were expended by the corporation by March 2013. Supporting his claim with data he said that the percentage of fund given by Delhi government to the corporation has decreased from 19.48 percent in 2007-08 to 8.98 percent in 2010-11 and grant also decreased from 16.8 percent in 2006-07 to 10.28 percent in 2010-11.

He announced the 1000 seated auditorium of the civic centre has been completed and would be given on lease very soon. In the budget for 2013-14 the maximum Rs 629 crore allocation has been made for education followed by Rs 597 crore on sanitation. He also increased the budget allocation for councillors from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1.41 crore.
