Pay or leave, school tells EWS student

A government unaided school, Green Fields Public School, A-2, Safdarjung Enclave, New Delhi, built on public land that was allotted to it on concessional rates, has denied continuation of free education beyond class VIII, to a student, Mansi Sharma of Class VIII, resident of A-130, Krishna Nagar, Safdarjung Enlcave. Mansi is from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), but the school has allegedly asked the girl’s parents to either pay the school-fee or withdraw the child from the school.

Sudhir Kumar Sharma, Mansi’s father said, 'My daughter has received a notice dated 25 February, from the school , informing us that since she has now attained the age of 14 years, as per the guidelines laid down by the government, the student is no longer eligible for free education from the next session 2013-14.'

Ashok Aggarwal, Advisor Social Jurist said, 'Since Green Fields School, Safdarjung Enclave is on public land allotted to it on concessional rates, it is obliged to continue to provide free education  to  EWS students even beyond class VIII, till the students complete Senior Secondary education.’

Amit Singla Director of Education, Delhi, said they would look in to the case.
