Parrikar meets PM Modi, set to become Def Min

Well placed sources said prime minister Narendra Modi has already given his consent to make Parrikar the next defence minister. The move is part of Modi’s plan to expand the union cabinet. If things move according to script, the expansion could happen before the winter session.

Sources said there are high chances that PM will make the announcement before 12 November because after that he will be on several foreign tours. He wants to expand and make some changes in the cabinet before he goes out to fulfill foreign commitments,’ party insider said.

In a telephonic conversation with the Millennium Post, Goa BJP president Vinay Dinu Tendulkar confirmed the move of Parrikar’s induction in the cabinet. He said, ‘Talks were going for the last few weeks of his elevation to the centre. So far it is confirmed but the final call has to be taken by our PM.’

When asked with Parrikar’s exit from the state politics, who could be the next chief minister of Goa, he said, ‘There are few names but it is yet to be finalised. The names will be sent to the PM as well as to the party President Amit Shahji for the green signal.’

Earlier, in its 10 February edition, Millennium Post has reported that Parrikar will be elevated as a cabinet minister after he had a meeting with Rajnath Singh (now union home minister) and RSS leadership in the national capital over the issue. Then Goa Health Minister Laxmikant Parsenkar had then demanded that Parrikar should be included in the union government if BJP comes to power. ‘He is a knowledgeable, experienced person and his performance is outstanding, he should be in the central cabinet,’ Parsenkar had said.

With Parrikar’s exit from the state almost certain, talks are on in some quarters that the move comes at the behest of the strong mining mafia, the lobby which wants to revive illegal mining in the state.
Sources said the BJP’s central leadership including Shah reportedly had a talk with Parrikar to discuss the formalities. A graduate from IIT Bombay, Parrikar is the CM of Goa since March 2012.

Earlier, he was the CM of the state from 2000 to 2005. It was learnt that Modi has a high regards for Parrikar for his clean image and excellent administrative skills, which is exactly needed by Modi to strengthen the defence sector of India.

Meanwhile, when asked to comment on the matter, Parrikar said: ‘He (PM) has not said anything about that. I discussed with him issues concerning my state Goa.’
