Parking woes plague Delhi

A lot has been said about solving the city’s parking woes, but when it comes to action, except for the Kamla Nagar market project, which is nearing completion after a missed deadline, NDMC has nothing much to show. On paper though, eight multi-level parking sites are being planned.

In a status report submitted by NDMC Commissioner P K Gupta to the house it was stated that the work on seven automated parking sites could not even take off.

‘The groundwork on six automated parking sites is yet to start. We will soon allot the bids at four parking sites while at two parking sites in Qutab Road and Hamillon Road, the corporation is yet to received the land,’ said P K Gupta in the general meeting of the house.

The project was floated by erstwhile MCD around five years ago. At Kamla Nagar automated parking site, around 80 per cent work has been completed, but the officers could not tell for sure when the project would be completed.

‘The contractor is using the land for carrying out his own business at the site. It a clear case of misuse of land,’ alleged Mahender Nagpal, Leader of House and demanded an enquiry. NDMC did not receive any response for its tender opened on 16 February 2012 for two parking sites one at Shastri Park Karol Bagh and another at Sant Nagar Rani Bagh, hence the tenders for these sites would be reinvited.

The tendering process for Lakkar Mandi, Padam Singh Road and Karam Pura are at advanced stage of completion. The councillors demanded the corporation to put a detailed report on delay in construction of all the automated and conventional parking sites.

The work on five conventional parking sites is also being carried out in haphazard way. Even the tender has not been floated for Central Market Ashok Vihar parking site. Construction of parking at MCD Park near Shiva Market was stalled due an incident of cave in on 9 June, while the work on QU Block in Pitampura was stopped by the contractors around one and half years ago without any notice to MCD. The work on first site is completed only by 17 per cent while on second only 4 per cent. Parade Gound and Model Town projects are near completion.
