With a clear view to increase parking rates in the city, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Najeeb Jung on Friday directed the offices of transport department to prepare a draft for differential parking rates and premium parking rates in crowded market places to demoralise private vehicles in the area and also promote multi-level parking system.
‘Presently, parking in multi-level parking lots is Rs 30 in comparison to Rs 10 for surface parking. So people prefer to park their vehicles on the road. The proposal is to increase surface parking so that multi-level parking becomes more convenient for commuters,’ said a senior government officer. The LG also wants the parking rates in busy market places like Chandni Chowk and Lajpat Nagar areas to increase in order to make it ‘premium rate’ so that buyers prefer public transport system.
Interestingly, the same arguments of ‘promoting public transport and demoralising private transport’
to hike parking rates to decongest traffic were put forth by the Supreme Court appointed Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) headed by Bhure Lal.
As per the recommendations of the committee, the then LG had also issued directions to all the three corporations to implement the hiked rates of over 200 percent but the three MCDs had rejected the proposal. Presently, it would be pertinent to see if the L-G can successfully implement the new policy.
In another initiative to decongest and reduce air pollution in the city, the LG directed the PWD and UTTIPEC departments to make provisions for U-turns or underpasses at specific border locations so that entry of non-destined vehicles, who use Delhi as transit routes, may be prohibited and non destined vehicles turned back.
These provisions shall be put in place within the next two months. ‘We will make these arrangements till peripheral highways like — East and West Corridor, Faridabad-Noida-Gurgaon corridors are being constructed,’ said the official. The transport department has also been directed to install weigh- in-motion systems to check the menace of overloading as it ejects more pollutants in the city.
