Paper on Tihar jail wins AAOU’s silver medal

The Indira Gandhi National Open University’s (IGNOU) research and training assistant (RTA), Kaushalendra Pratap Singh, has won the  silver ‘Young Innovator Award 2012’.

Singh from the School of Social Work (SOSW), had submitted a paper on ‘Reaching the unreached – IGNOU’s intervention in Tihar Central Jail, New Delhi’ during the 26th Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) Annual Conference that was held in Japan from 16 October to 18 October 2012.

In his paper, he highlighted IGNOU’s intervention in the Tihar Central Jail.

IGNOU provides education to the disadvantaged and unreached learners (some of them living in special circumstances) to build an inclusive knowledge society through inclusive education.

One of the world’s largest prisons is the Tihar Central Jail located in New Delhi, which has about 12,000 prisoners accommodated in its 10 jails. There are over 530 prisoners enrolled for various programmes from certificate to post graduation with IGNOU. The SOSW is facilitating the coordination of a study centre of IGNOU in this prison.

Faculty, research scholars and students visit the jail thrice a week to cater to the learners living in special circumstances.
