A West Bengal minister on Wednesday made a strong case for building public toilets for the transgender and urged the corporate world to come forward with help.
“The least a trans-gender deserves is a public toilet. Unfortunately, we have none. Please come forward with your CSR funds to build a few public toilets for them,” Minister of State (independent charge) for Women and Child Development and Social Welfare Shashi Panja said at the 8th CII Corporate Social Responsibility Meet 2015 here on Wednesday.
As per state government figures, the number of the transgenders in West Bengal stands at 30,349.
“All you are required to do is approach the urban development department for land,” she said in her appeal to the corporate houses. The first toilet for transgenders in the country was opened in Mysore on November 19.
