The fledgling Middle East peace process today suffered a setback when the Palestinian Authority cancelled talks with Israeli negotiators in response to the killing of three Palestinians in the West Bank.
Israeli security forces who arrived this morning in Kalandiya near Ramallah to arrest a terror suspect came under large scale attack by hundreds of Palestinians, resulting in deadly clashes in which three Palestinians were killed.
A Palestinian source said that the talks likely to be held at chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat's house in Jericho today were called off because of the ‘deadly Israeli crimes’.
The fragile peace process was revived at the end of last month under US mediation and the two sides met thrice last week in Jerusalem away from media glare.
The meetings to date have been held between Israel's Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and envoy Yitzhak Malho with Palestinian negotiators Saeb Erekat and Mohammed Shtayyeh.
An aide to PA President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the killings.
