Pakistan sense victory after South Africa slump

South Africa lost four top-order batsmen against a spirited Pakistan and now need another 121 runs to avoid an innings defeat at Sheikh Zayed Stadium and concede the lead in the two-Test series.

AB de Villiers was unbeaten on 11 and nightwatchman Dale Steyn on nought after captain Misbah-ul Haq (in pic) scored his fourth Test hundred. Pakistan removed Alviro Petersen (17), Graeme Smith (32) and Jacques Kallis (nought) by the 19th over and then first innings centurion Hashim Amla for 10 to move closer to victory before bad light halted play seven overs early.

Paceman Mohammad Irfan struck in his sixth over when Alviro Petersen edged a rising delivery to wicketkeeper Adnan Akmal. Smith missed one delivery from Saeed Ajmal and was stumped on second attempt by Akmal while Kallis was trapped by Junaid Khan for a five-ball duck.

Briefscores: South Africa 249 and 72 for 4 (Smith 32) trail Pakistan 442 (Manzoor 146, Misbah 100, Shafiq 54) by 121 runs.
