China on Friday said it has not yet been officially informed about the arrest of the mastermind behind the Taliban attack that killed 10 foreign mountaineers including two Chinese in northern Pakistan in June.
On Thursday, Pakistan had announced the arrest of Qaribullah alias Hasan at Chilas. Qaribullah is a former leader of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) unit in Chilas in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and is suspected to be the mastermind behind the 23 June attack.
Taliban militants disguised as paramilitary personnel had stormed a mountaineering base camp in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of PoK that serves as a base for climbers headed for Nanga Parbat, the world’s ninth highest mountain.
The attack was an embarrassment for the PML-N government as it came just weeks after it had assumed office and offered peace talks to the insurgents.
‘China has noticed relevant reports but China has not got official verification from Pakistan,’ Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a media briefing.
He was answering questions about reports quoting Pakistani officials that the perpetrators of the attack have been arrested.
