Pak prosecutor on 26/11 case gunned down in Islamabad

The senior Pakistani prosecutor of Federal Investigation Agency Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali, who was shot down by unidentified gunmen in Islamabad on Friday, was about to submit final evidence against seven members of the Lashkar-e-Taiyyaba group in connection with the Mumbai 26/11 case.

Sources said that his evidence included planning, training and money-transfer trails in Pakistan that culminated into the Mumbai attacks. He was also handling the Benazir Bhutto assassination case.

Ali had also headed the panel which visited India last year in March to gather evidence for the prosecution of seven suspects. 'We had extended our full support during that visit. Even apprehension over the security which was expressed prior to their visit last year were taken care of and we had gave an assurance that they will be safe here,' a Ministry of External Affairs official said.

On 13 April, a private witness from Karachi had identified Shahid Jamil Riaz, one of the accused in the Mumbai attack case, as the person who had bought inflatable boats used by terrorists in 26/11 case. According to reports in the Pak media Ali had been facing threats by Pakistan Taliban since he was instrumental in expediting proceedings against five members of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan detained for Bhutto's murder. He had also recently begun interrogating former president Musharraf over 2007 assassination.

Kanimozhi had no role in Rs 200 cr transaction, says 2G witness: New Delhi: A prosecution witness on Friday told a Delhi court that DMK MP Kanimozhi, who is facing trial in the 2G spectrum allocation scam case, had ‘no role at all’ in the Rs 200 crore transactions between Kalaignar TV (P) Ltd and Cineyug Films (P) Limited.

The statement assumes significance as it contradicts the CBI theory according to which Kanimozhi was taking interest in the day-to-day affairs of the TV channel in which she had 20 pc shares.

Deposing as a prosecution witness, G Rajendran, General Manager (Finance) of Kalaignar TV (P) Ltd, said the DMK MP had no role in the investment matters between Kalaignar TV and Cineyug Films (P) Ltd, whose Director Karim Morani is also facing trial in the case.

‘It is correct that in all the investment matters from Cineyug Films (P) Limited to Kalaignar TV (P) Limited and vice versa, Kanimozhi Karunanithi had no role at all,’ he told Special CBI Judge O P Saini during his cross examination by senior counsel Ram Jethmalani, who appeared for the DMK MP.

Rajendran, whose recording of statement concluded on Friday, told the court that Kalaignar TV had applied for the requisite licence from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting more than a month after Kanimozhi's resignation from directorship of the channel on June 20, 2007.

‘It is correct that application for licence to Ministry of I&B, was made for the first time on 30 July, 2007, more than a month after resignation of Kanimozhi. ‘It is correct that it would be wrong to say that Kanimozhi was looking after the obtaining of licence.’
