Paes-Stepanek makes a winning start at ATP finals

The seventh seeded Paes and Stepanek pair beat the Austria-Brazilain combination 6-3 5-7 10-8 in one hour and 42 minutes.

Before prevailing in the Super Tie breaker, Paes and Stepanek overcame some anxious moments towards the end as their rivals fought hard.

Paes and Stepanek serevd throughout well but it was in the 12th game of the second set, when the Indian dropped his serve from 40-15 to make it a more thrilling contest, stretched to a Super Tie breaker.

Before that they had four chance to break their rivals but Peya and Soares saved all. Paes and Stepanek had four match points but Peya and Soares saved three of the them. The Indo-Czech pair is now second in the four-team Group B, behind Spanish combo of David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco.

Del Potro beats Gasquet at ATP Tour finals


LONDON: Former finalist Juan Martin del Potro battled his way past Richard Gasquet 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-5 to win his opening round-robin match at the ATP Finals on Monday.  Del Potro extended his record against Gasquet to 6-1 and secured a crucial win in a tough Group B that also includes Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

Playing at the season-ending tournament for the first time since 2007, Gasquet produced some stunning shots but struggled to return del Potro’s big serve in a match laced with unforced errors from both sides.

Stanislas Wawrinka shocked the fifth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 in the opening Group A engagement of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals late on Monday at the O2 Arena.

Wawrinka, who held a 7-5 advantage in head-to-head clashes, having won their last two meetings, started strongly, but lost his way temporarily in the second set. The Swiss, an all-court player, came back strongly in the decider, breaking his opponent in the fourth game to take a 4-1 lead.

Wawrinka, playing his first season finale, then served out the match in the ninth game to earn a much needed victory.
