The BJP alleged that Owaisi was indulging in “communal politics” over terrorism and nothing could be “uglier” than this.
“He has done communal politics over terrorism. There can not be an uglier form of communal politics. Owaisi sees religion in everything. The decision for execution is taken by the Supreme Court and not <g data-gr-id="80">government</g>,” Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said.
The Minister also cited as to how Owaisi in a Parliamentary committee meeting had questioned “Hindu” names such as Agni, Aakash and Arjun for defence weaponry.
On Owaisi’s query about who had given them “Hindu” names, an officer present replied that it was APJ Abdul Kalam, the noted scientist who went on to become the President of India, Javadekar recalled, while lashing out at the Hyderabad MP.
In controversial remarks over capital punishment to Memon, Owaisi sought to know whether the perpetrators of demolition of disputed structure in Ayodhya, communal riots of Mumbai and Gujarat and other such sensational cases would get a similar punishment.
“Why haven’t the perpetrators who demolished the Babri Masjid been convicted and will they also be given capital punishment as that is the original sin?” the Hyderabad MP said, hinting that Memon was being hanged because of his religion.
Death row: SC to hear Yakub’s plea
The Apex Court will hear the plea of Yakub Abdul Razak Memon, the sole death row convict in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case – seeking stay of execution of his death sentence scheduled for July 30 – on Monday. “I have already assigned the Bench. The file had come to me. It will come up on Monday,” said the Chief Justice HL Dattu. "This is a sensitive matter,” the Bench, comprising Justices Arun Mishra and Amitava Roy, said noting that it has been already assigned to a Bench headed by Justice AR Dave for July 27. While senior advocate Raju Ramachandran mentioned the petition for Memon, senior counsel TR Andhyarujina appeared for Death Penalty Litigation Clinic.
Late RAW official wanted leniency for Yakub
New Delhi: A late top official of RAW had favoured clemency for death row convict Yakub Memon on the grounds that he had cooperated with agencies and does not deserve to be hanged. B Raman, who retired as Additional Secretary in 1994 and was <g data-gr-id="113">in-charge</g> of counter-terrorism, had written an article. The article has now been published on 'Rediff.com' and talks about Memon being picked up in Nepal and his subsequent formal arrest at Old Delhi railway station by the CBI. <g data-gr-id="114">Ramans</g> brother BS Raghavan said: “Everything that has been published is correct and he (Raman) had written it”. Raman died in 2013.
