Over 1,100 cases under CBI investigation: Govt

Over 1,100 cases are at different stages of investigation by the CBI, the government said on Thursday. “As per information made available by CBI, a total number of 1,126 cases are at different stages of investigation as on June 30,” Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Jitendra Singh said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha.

He said <g data-gr-id="19">investigation</g> is conducted by CBI as per provisions of Code of Criminal Procedure and as per instructions contained in the crime manual.

“In some cases, the investigation takes time because of the complicated nature of cases requiring scrutiny of voluminous documents and examination of large number of witnesses, conducting extensive enquiries and in obtaining opinion of experts to establish the allegations.

“No time frame can be assigned for completion of investigation as it depends on <g data-gr-id="23">nature</g> of the individual case,” Singh said. He said the CBI has disposed off from investigation 1,173 cases in 2010, 992 in 2011, 1,019 in 2012, 1,070 in 2013, 1,094 in 2014 and 361 between January and June this year. 

Pendency of cases in SC has come down: Govt
The pendency of cases in the Supreme Court has come down from 62,791 in January this year to 61,016 as on July 29, Lok Sabha was informed. Law Minister DV Sadananda Gowda said the apex court disposed of 92,722 cases in 2014, 77,085 in 2013 and 68,744 in 2012. Referring to the high courts, he said 41,53,957 cases were pending in 2014 as against 44,62,705 in 2013 and 44,34,191 in 2012. 

In subordinate courts, the number of pending cases was 2,64,88,405 in 2014, he said. "Some of the main factors responsible for pendency of cases in courts are increasing number of states and central legislations, accumulation of first appeals, continuation of ordinary civil jurisdiction in some of the high courts and vacancies of judges," he said. <g data-gr-id="45">Number</g> of revision, frequent adjournments, indiscriminate use of writ jurisdiction, lack of adequate arrangement to monitor also accounted for the pendency of cases, he said.

‘108 IRS officers under CBI probe for alleged corruption’
As many as 108 officers of Indian Revenue Service (IRS) are under probe by the CBI for their alleged involvement in corruption, Rajya Sabha was informed on Thursday. The CBI has registered cases of alleged corruption against 121 officials between 2012 and June 2015, Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Jitendra Singh said in a written reply. Of these, 70 officers are of IRS (Customs and Central Excise), 38 of IRS (Income Tax), 12 Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers and one belonging to Indian Police Service (IPS), he said.
