In a major haul, the food and civil supplies department of Uttar Pradesh claimed to have seized and destroyed over 100 tonnes of adulterated mawa, cottage cheese, and other milk products from over dozens of factories and shops in Noida region, during the past one month period.
As per reports, around 80 per cent of khoya available in the market these days is adulterated.
Sources have claimed that several districts of western UP are involved in the production of adulterated khoya and the region has become major supplier of the same in the national Capital.
‘The rural belts of Baghpat, Bulandshar, Badaut, Ghaziabad and Greater Noida have become a safe heaven for those who are involved in this illegal trade. Over 100 factories are involved in such activities. Most of these factories are housed in the rural region’, said an official from government department.
The source further added that the adulterated khoya is prepared with boiled potato, soybean oil, sugar dust, milk powder and other similar materials. ‘The adulterated khoya is sold at very high premiu. This unorganised industry has a turnover of around Rs 800 crore’, the source claimed.
A trader from Khurja area in Gautambudh Nagar informed that around dozens of factories are running illegally in the locality as there is a large demand of khoya in Old Delhi area. ‘We have been supplying khoya and other products to Fatehpuri, Fawwara and other markets for more than 100 years. During festive seasons their demand registers manifold increase. To fulfil the demand, we mix 50 percent of khoya with other materials,’ confessed the trader requesting anonymity. Vineet Kumar, chief food inspector of Gautambudh Nagar, said that they have formed a team to check illegal trade, which is conducting raids at various places in the district.
‘The department has sent over 100 samples of sweets, cottage cheese, khoya and other items for verification. We seized 400 kg of cottage cheese and 200 kg of adulterated khoya in a raid near Mahamaya flyover in Noida on Monday, which is the biggest seizure ever in the region.
