A vintage complete set of Ravi Shankar’s original LP records for films, Hindi cinema’s silent era memorabilia and some rare posters of Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor starrer films will be the highlights of Osian’s inaugural Osianama auction next month.
The first Osianama series auction on 9 February will highlight Indian antiquities, modern and contemporary fine arts and vintage Indian film memorabilia including rare original artworks and photographic prints.
Among the highlights in the film publicity material section are Hindi cinema’s forgotten and silent era (black and white) memorabilia from the Zafar Aabid collection such as pre-independence rare stills including the cast and crew from Himanshu Rai’s 1928 classic silent film Shiraz; signed and dated 1930 portrait of silent era actress Sulochana; and photographic stills from 1937 Gangavataran, the first and the last talking film by Dadasaheb Phalke.
Also included in this section are one of the first artworks for Kamal Amrohi’s Razia Sultan made many years before the film was completed; a rare and six-sheet poster of the 1980 Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor starrer Do Aur Do Panch; and another rare poster of the Shammi Kapoor starrer Raat Ke Rahi, designed by famous poster designer of the 1960s Pradyuman who also designed the famous BR Films logo.
Another unique offering is the rare set of Ravi Shankar’s original LP records for the five films that he was associated with - Anuradha (1960), Godaan (1963), Pather Panchali (1964), Meera (1979) and Gandhi (1982).
The highlights of the antiquities section are the late 18th-19th century miniatures from Kangra, Mandi, Deccani, Bundi, Kotah and an early 19th century Pahari School miniature painting depicting an extraordinarily fine illustration from the Harivamsa; and rare paintings from the Patna and Lucknow’s company school.
The many highlights of the modern and contemporary fine arts section include Nandalal Bose’s depiction of Chandragupta and Chanakya on cloth, Abanindranath Tagore’s mesmeric early Shah Jahan Imprisoned watercolour; V S Gaitonde’s 1969 untitled canvas from the same series which Christie’s recently sold for nearly Rs 5 crore in New York; M F Husain’s In Honour of the Moon Landing (1969) created on Kite paper; and Manjit Bawa’s famous iconic work Death of Safdar Hashmi which was part of the first Sahmat auction in 1989.
Commenting on Osian’s ongoing and developing trend of the auction combining various cultural disciplines, chairman of Osian’s Group, Neville Tuli, said, ‘It is important that step by step, the Indian public and collector base begins to see various cultural disciplines on common platforms, so that the ability to contextualise our cultural and economic history increases. From this, respect for each art form opens up in new ways which specialisation alone cannot accomplish given the few opportunities where public discourse on pricing, history and aesthetics occur together.’
