‘Open schooling: need of the hour’

The second day of the conference, Education For All: Role of Open schooling, being organised by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), began with a keynote address on ‘Quality in School Education: Issues & Concerns for Open Distance Learning’ by Shyam Menon, vice-chancellor, B R Ambedkar University, Delhi.
Menon, while addressing, reposed his faith in the panchayati raj system and was of the opinion that the civil society ambit may be increased from India Gate to panchayat so that the youth become literate.’
This was followed by a panel discussion on vocational education and skill development. The discussion chaired by Fancy Amey, director, Learner Support, Botswana College of Distance and Open Learning (BOCODOL), Botswana, included panelists such as Joginder S Sodhi, Ram Centre for Industrial Relations, Human Resources, Economic & Social Development, New Delhi, Ankita Mishra Bundela, Secretary, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Goverment of India, New Delhi and K P Wasnik, director (vocational education), NIOS, Noida. Shigeru Aoyagi, director and UNESCO representative to India, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka.
The afternoon session began with a keynote address by Santosh Panda, professor, distance education, STRIDE, IGNOU on ‘Planning the Instructional Strategies in School Education: Implications for Open Schooling’.
