Only Chinese in this house please!

Connaught Place has a barrage of restaurants and cafes. Some old, some new and some totally avoidable. My first stint with CP’s restaurants was with QBA in 2009 (two years after I moved to Delhi, you cannot exactly dine lavish when you stay in the hostel and don’t earn anything). 2014 and counting, QBA still has a special place in my heart because my aunt and I got very giggly over cocktails there all those years ago.

In all honesty, I have not visited QBA recently. So many newer spots have opened up and old joints have come up with ingenious offers on food and drinks, that more often than not, you end up trooping elsewhere. But then when QBA came up with The China House - could you possibly say no? As a friend put it eloquently - Chinese food is like Kryptonite. The China House by QBA rests grandly at K 12 Outer Circle. Nirulas would be the best landmark for this restaurant.

The wooden door makes way to a nice spacious sitting area with high ceilings and a neat bar. The decorations up above caught our eye. They have used the traditional oil paper parasols to decorate the ceiling and it looks very pretty.

Seated and glad to be out of the heat we started off with the butter fried prawns. Restaurant manager Amit pointed out that this was one dish they always recommended to guests. With coconut milk as the special ingredient, these prawns are a must try. They are the best prawn starters I have had in a very long time. And also the black pepper crispy sole was very good. If you aren’t the types to order fish or prawns as starters - there is always the regular chicken and lamb options. They have an interesting assortment of dimsums on offer and we would recommend the chicken seven spice.
In the main course the stir fried prawns sichuan sauce and the sliced chicken chilly basil are quite good, but we suggest you pair it with plain noodles or rice to enjoy them best.

The China House has a lot of interesting ‘meals in a bowl’ which serves a main dish with noodles or sticky rice (you choose). If you are in a hurry, these are extremely fulfilling options.
What we loved however was the Rendang Indonesian lamb curry withsticky rice. It was a wonderful balance of signature Indonesian curry flavours with the cononut milk and of course the very well cooked lamb and went with the sticky rice like a dream. Confession time - I love sticky rice!
We wrapped it all up with date pancakes and we were all ready to sleep right there.
A meal for two comes to about Rs 1200 (without taxes and alcohol) - which is great! So head over!
