‘Only 3% private schools in Delhi-NCR have counsellors’

This goes against the guidelines of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) that all educational institutes should have full-time counselors. Assocham has released the report under the aegis of its Social Development Foundation.

Speaking on the verdict, CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi, said, ‘The work is in progress, We have asked the schools to appoint the counsellors. Soon the counsellors will be appointed in schools.’

Manju Negi, additional director of Assocham said, ‘Our recent survey reveals that nearly 3 per cent of privately-owned schools in Delhi-NCR have counsellors in their schools despite charging a hefty school fees.’

‘The survey was conducted in Delhi-NCR and covered almost 3,200 schools and observed that the picture remains dismal. Among the schools surveyed, 2,200 are in Delhi and include some prominent schools,’ Negi said.

The additional director went on to say that the statistics are sad and disturbing. ‘Majority of the private schools in Delhi-NCR are violating educational norms and not following CBSE guidelines which state that each school must have a counsellor,’ she added.

‘The most common problems children face nowadays are scholastic performance pressure, lack of interpersonal communication because of nuclear families and dysfunctional families. Lack of counselling at the right time is adding to the trouble,’ said BK Rao, chairperson of Assocham, while releasing the paper.
