Online FIRs soon, says Delhi Police chief

‘A special initiative has been taken through which people will be able to file the FIR (First Information Report) for crimes such as theft and forgery sitting at home, through the police website,’ said Bassi at the 67th Raising Day of Delhi Police. ‘The facility will be launched 18-19 Feb,’ added Bassi.

The commissioner said the new four-digit helpline number for foreigners would also be introduced soon to make it easy for them to register their complaints as the previous 10-digit number was difficult to memorise.

It was on 16 February, 1948, that DW Mehra was appointed the first inspector general of police of Delhi, and since then this day is celebrated as Delhi police Raising Day. Currently, the total strength of Delhi police stands at 83,762.

Meanwhile addressing Delhi police personnel after taking the salute at their 67th Raising Day Parade, the minister of state for home RPN Singh said that Delhi belonged to all Indians and nobody should feel unsafe here.

‘Delhi police is one of the best forces in the country, but there is more we need to achieve,’ Singh said. He was referring to the case of Nido Tania, the youth from Arunachal Pradesh who died recently after being assaulted in the city.

Singh said, ‘A situation where the common man feels no hesitation or fear in contacting police would be ideal,’ while adding that ‘it is sad that women feel unsafe in the city’.

Citing the incident where a 19-year-old boy from Arunachal Pradesh was beaten to death by some shopkeepers in a south Delhi market, RPN Singh said that Delhi police should make sure that such incidents do not happen again and initiatives are taken towards their safety.

Talking about the issue of corruption, Singh said that an zero tolerance approach needs to be adopted by all if graft was to be erased.

‘Corruption has become a disease in our country which must be eradicated,’ he said.
Meanwhile, talking about the steps taken by Delhi police to ensure the safety of people from the northeast here, commissioner BS Bassi pointed at the recently launched anti-racism helpline.
