Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel has demanded longer terms for mayors in municipal corporations. He demanded amendment in the system of reservation of the post of mayor for women, under both the General and the SC category.
‘The one-year term for mayor is too short. It must be extended,’ said Vijay Goel during the filling of nominations by BJP candidates in East Delhi Municipal Corporation. ‘The change of the mayor becomes compulsory as it is reserved for woman, General and SC category in the consecutive years,’ added Goel. He further demanded more wards in Delhi.
‘In London there is one councillor to represent 1,000 voters but in Delhi, one councillor represents over 50,000 voters. How could Delhi Chief Minister claim to make it a world class city,’ said Goel.
On Tuesday, Ram Narain Dubey and Mahinder Ahuja of BJP filed their nominations for the coveted posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of East DMC.
Rajeev Verma and Raj Kumari of Congress also filed their nominations for these posts respectively. The election would be held on next Tuesday.
Sanjay Surjan and Sanjay Kaushik of BJP filed their nominations for the posts of members of the Standing Committee to be nominated from the Corporation. There are three vacancies of members of Standing Committee from East Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Leader of opposition in East DMC Varyam Kaur is likely to file her nomination on Wednesday. In 64 member corporation, BJP has 34 councillors which is one more than full majority followed by 19 councillors of Congress, four of BSP and seven independents. As ruling BJP has clear majority, the election of BJP candidates for the post of mayor and deputy mayor and chairman of standing committee is clear but Congress has increased the tension in BJP camp by claiming to enjoy the support of some rival BJP councillors.
