The police have figures showing that the security of women in Delhi is compromised mainly by those who are known to them or are familiar. The cops are on a different mission altogether, emphasizing the fact that the city is safe enough for women to roam free.
A highly placed source in the department said: ‘Delhi Police is planning make the crime-data public by sharing it on their website, using social media, posters and hoardings. The data will be well-categorized in two parts and will be specifically differentiating the cases filed against known persons of the victim and those filed against the unknown.’
The data of past few years revealed that around 97% of the rape cases reported in 2013 and 2012 were against known persons. Out of 1159 cases of rapes reported in 2013 and 680 cases in 2012, only 3% of them were committed by unknown persons. In 2014, till 31 May, 797 rape cases have been reported in various police stations in Delhi. During investigation, in more than 93% cases known persons were found to be the accused.
‘Post Nirbhaya gang-rape case, tourism in Delhi has reportedly been affected. The female tourists think that Delhi is not safe for women; hooligans are roaming here and there, women cannot step out alone after sun-down. But it is not true! It is high time that we change the perception that women are not safe on Delhi roads,’ a senior police official said.
‘Blaming only policing is not the right solution. People need to understand the status of the accused held responsible for crime against women. Differentiation between crime committed by a known person (97%) and an unknown person (3%) is a must,’ she added. In a recent meeting held at police headquarters headed by Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Taj Hassan, sources said, it was discussed that policemen should be held responsible only for the crime committed by unknown persons. For the past few months, the behaviour of police has also changed and that is why more victimised females are steeping out to report cases.
‘The data showing the crime ratio, specifically mentioning the accused relationship with the victim, will soon be available on the official website of Delhi Police. It will somewhere help in building up the image of the national capital again,’ the source added.
