According to the police, the accident took place at around 9.15 pm after one of its wheels came off while it was on Defence Colony flyover and the mini bus skidded off the road near Jangpura metro station in southeast Delhi.
According to the victims, the bus was hired by a group of government employees living in south Delhi to commute to their respective offices. The driver would pick up passengers from Pushp Vihar in south Delhi and ferry them to their offices in central Delhi.
On Friday morning, when the RTV (road-taxed vehicle) picked all the passengers and started moving
towards the destination, the front right wheel of the bus came off. As a result, the driver applied brakes, but as the bus was in motion it started titling. Eyewitnesses claim that within fraction of a second, the bus rammed into a barrier and turned sideways.
After the collision, the other wheel of the bus too came out and it was damaged completely. One of the passenger, identified as Dharmendra Arora, a railway employee and resident of Madangir was killed after he fell out of the bus and came under its wheels.
He was immediately rushed to AIIMS trauma Centre but was declared brought dead, said a police officer. Nineteen people suffered injuries on their heads and limbs and have been taken to AIIMS and RML hospitals for medical care, the officer said, adding that the condition of two of them is said to be serious ‘We are also investigating if driver was at fault. Police will soon take the statement of victims and further investigation is underway,’ police added.
Meanwhile, the owner of the bus who was driving the bus at the time of the accident, has been slapped with various sections of Indian Penal Code including rash driving causing death by negligence.
