Approximately every 10th person in the national capital is drinking contaminated water, a recent test report of water samples examined by the three civic bodies has revealed. The civic bodies tested 569 samples out of which 79 were found unfit for drinking, which means 14 per cent of the samples failed the test which shows 1.4 of every 100 individual is being supplied contaminated water in Delhi.
According to the test report of water samples, the worst hit areas in terms of contaminated water supply are- Civil Lines and Paharganj zones of North Delhi Municipal Corporation where all the water samples failed the test. The officers of the civic bodies had picked up eight water samples from Paharganj and 21 water samples from the Civil Lines area, but all the water samples were found unfit for drinking. The situation in the Najafgarh area is slightly better, as 28 per cent samples failed the test followed by 26 per cent failed samples in Narela.
The report is based on the water samples tested by the three civic bodies in the week ending on 18 May. The water samples of city zone, west zone, east Delhi and south Delhi were found to be satisfactory. So far this summer, the three civic bodies have tested 9,453 water samples of which 595 samples were found unfit for drinking. Among the unit water samples, 536 were from the North DMC area, 50 from South DMC and nine from East DMC area.
But the water samples jointly picked up by Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and civic bodies present a better situation. In the same week ending May 18, the joint team tested 569 water samples in Delhi of which only seven were found contaminated. Out of these seven failed samples, two were from North DMC and five were from the East DMC area. 'The officers of DJB pick up samples from posh areas which have better treatment system so the results are better. But these results do not reflect the ground reality,' said Mahinder Nagpal, leader of House in North DMC. The DJB in this summer has tested 4,457 water samples out of which 135 were found unfit for drinking. According to the North corporation registers, 14 cases of cholera have been reported so far.
