One held for assaulting cops on duty

Two men in an inebriated state allegedly assaulted a Delhi Police traffic constable while one of the duo bit the finger of another traffic constable for signalling them to stop for driving in the wrong direction in Outer Delhi’s Rohini area on late Sunday night. Police have arrested one of the accused identified as Hemant. He is son of a Delhi Police constable posted with Police Training Unit. Meanwhile, the other accused is still absconding. According to the police, the incident took place 12.15 am when Head Constable Satyabir Singh along with constable Hoti Lal were on night patrolling duty near the Rohini Circle. While heading from Madhuban Chowk towards Rithala, the two policemen spotted a Maruti Swift Dzire car going in a wrong direction.

Police said that the policemen signalled the car driver to stop. When the cops asked the driver, Hemant to show papers of the car, he became angry. He along with his friend Nitin allegedly started hurling abuses at them. This further escalated into a scuffle when Hemant and Nitin started beating Singh. To save Singh, Hoti Lal intervened. On this, Nitin chewed finger on Hoti Lal’s right hand.

In the meantime, the other accused, Hemant tharshed Singh with a helmet. Both the policemen were bleeding profusely. Some locals gathered and with the help of the locals, the cops were able to arrest Hemant while Nitin managed to flee from the spot, said police. According to a senior police officer, Hemant was arrested under Sections 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 332 (Voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and 34 (act done by several persons).
