One gets 7 years for raping minor

A man has been sent to seven years in jail by a Delhi court for raping a 13-year-old girl three years ago.

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Renu Bhatnagar held Assam native Wahidur Rehman guilty of raping the minor after taking her to a ridge near Nizamuddin Dargah, finding her there alone.

The court held that from the statement of the girl and her medical records, it has been proved that sexual intercourse was committed by the accused without her consent.

‘Convict (Rehman) is sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for seven years and a fine of Rs 5,000 for the offence under section 376 of the IPC,’ the court said.

According to the prosecution, the incident took place in 2010 when the girl was alone at Nizamuddin Dargah here while her mother was out of station. She told the court that Rehman came to her in the night and took her to a ridge and raped her.

After the case was registered and accused was arrested, the girl’s statement was recorded with the help of an NGO for children and she was also given counselling by a counsellor. The court said that the testimony of the girl regarding the incident of rape has been consistent throughout the case.

‘Her (girl) description of the act of rape is accurate and narrated with the understanding of a 13-year-old child. It is not spoken of with the sophistication of an adult and from this one can be reassured that the child has not been coached,’ the judge said.
