In yet another case of female infanticide in the capital, the body of a newly-born girl was found in a drain in Sangam Vihar area on Tuesdfay. Besides that, another baby girl was found abandoned in an area of east Delhi.
In the first incident, a passerby informed the police about the body of a baby floating in a drain of the main road in Sangam Vihar area of south-east Delhi. Soon afterwards, the local police reached the crime scene.
‘We fished out the body and realised that it was of a girl,’ said a senior police official. Immediately, the body was taken to a nearby hospital for post-mortem. There is a possibility that she might have been killed before being dumped into the drain.
‘Investigation is on and a case of murder has been registered against unknown persons. The area near the drain has been examined by cops to collect all possible evidence,’ said a police official.
According to the eye-witness, around 4 pm, he was passing by the area when he saw the body floating in the drain. ‘I thought it’s a toy, but later realised it was a child,’ he said. In the second case, a newly-born baby girl was found abandoned in Vishwas Nagar area of east Delhi. A passerby heard a child crying and found the girl near a garbage dumping ground.
He informed the police, who took him to the nearby hospital for treatment. The police said the girl did not have a single cloth on her and mosquitoes had bitten her all over.
‘There is a possibility that the child was left behind late last night,’ added the official.
On one hand, different organisations are putting in efforts to educate parents. On the other hand, such incidents of parents abandoning and killing their daughters keep coming to the fore on a regular basis.
Police have lodged an FIR against unidentified accused and started investigations.
The abandoned child has been admitted in ICU of Hedgewar hospital in east Delhi. Doctors said her condition seems critical, as she has not been fed even once since her birth.
