‘Let there be communal harmony. Let every person – irrespective of caste, creed or religion – live in peace. Let the light of Eid bring happiness in your lives. I pray to Allah to accept the roza of the people who have kept fasts over the past one month. May Allah keep you all hale and hearty’, the chief minister said after attending the Eid prayers in the city.
Senior party MP, Sougata Roy, explained the significance of Banerjee’s statement on communal harmony. ‘This call for communal harmony has a context in the light of the Saharanpur riots. The Trinamool Congress may be a regional party but it has a national focus’, Roy told Millennium Post.
The communal tension may also debated in the Parliament, said Roy. The riots – which broke out between Muslims and Sikhs in Saharanpur – have already claimed a few lives.
