Omar revamps NC ahead of assembly poll

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday effected major changes in the National Conference ahead of assembly elections due next year.

Abdullah appointed his political advisor Devender Singh Rana as party president for Jammu province and minister of state for home as president for Kashmir province.

He dissolved the provincial committees of Jammu and Kashmir provinces with immediate effect.
Surjit Singh Slathia, the industries minister till now, was named senior vice-president of the party.

Two other ministers appointed vice-presidents were Qamar Ali Akhoon and Aga Rahulla Mehndi.

Abdullah had taken the resignations of all party ministers and advisors Monday to revamp the party.

Governor N K Vohra accepted the resignations of seven ministers Tuesday. Six are from the National
Conference and one from the Congress.

Apart from Slathia, Akhoon and Mehndi, the other National Conference ministers who resigned are Abdul Ghani Malik, Nasir Aslam Wani and Javed Dar.

Medical Education Minister R S Chib from the Congress has been dropped.

Four more panchayat members belonging to north Kashmir’s Sopore area Tuesday have announced their resignations as they feared threat to their lives. Four panches from Dooru village of Sopore sub-division in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district appeared before the media in the summer capital Srinagar on Tuesday to announce their resignations. The village council members, including a woman, told media that they were feeling threatened in light of the recent killing of a sarpanch.
