Octogenarian’s beating: Daughter apologises before DCW

A woman, whose video of beating her 85-year-old mother went viral on social media last week, on Tuesday gave an apology in writing to Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) and promised never to repeat the offence. Last Tuesday, DCW had taken sou motu cognisance and summoned the daughter along with her brother.

“The daughter appeared before the Commission in the afternoon today along with her brother who resides in the UK. “The old woman’s son also gave it in writing to the Commission that he will take the whole sole responsibility of ensuring the protection and welfare of his mother and also informed the Commission that he is in the process of preparing the passport and the visa documents of his mother for he wishes to take his mother to London with him,” said a senior DCW official.

It was decided that the daughter would meet the old lady only under the strict supervision of her son as recommended by DCW team which had visited the woman’s house. The official said the property will remain in the old woman’s name and her pension will go to her account directly.

The Commission had taken strong note of the incident and reprimanded the family for not looking after their old mother properly. “The Commission will maintain a vigil and ensure action against them in case any lapse in the welfare and protection of the old lady is observed,” the official said.

Delhi Police has informed that a non-cognizable report was registered in the local police station against the daughter. On May 24, the Commission had written to the Delhi Police and ADM Senior Citizen Tribunal seeking protection and maintenance of the lady.
