Nursery admissions: Govt orders flex boards in schools

For the first time, an order has been issued by the Directorate of Education to all education officers at private unaided schools, to put up a flex board, which would help streamline the process of nursery admissions. To address the complaints by parents regarding nursery admissions, these flex boards need to be put up at the main entrance of each private unaided schools.

According to the order, ‘all education officers are directed to put up a flex board at the main entrance. The board will carry the name, zone number, office address, office telephone and mobile number of the education officer. The particulars on the board will be written in white and must be bilingual (Hindi and English)’.

Senior government official, speaking on anonymity said, ‘We have issued orders to streamline the process for nursery admissions in the academic session 2014-15 and to facilitate speedy redressal of grievances made by parents. We have also asked education officers from all zones to redress the injustices felt by parents and it will be the overall responsibility of deputy director of education (DDE) to ensure that these grievances are addressed in time. All the boards will be fixed before the admission process begins in 10 January.’

If parents are not satisfied with action taken by the education officer on their complaint, they can then contact the Ministry of Education helpline number (27352525). ‘If anyone is found violating the order, then it shall be viewed seriously’, added the officer.

Most parents in the city are satisfied with the redressal process. Sumit Bidhuri, a concerned father said, ‘Many schools flout norms established by the government and they take donations, in order to provide admissions through the back door for their wards. Now we can also keep a tab on the admission process too.

‘If any school is found violating such norms, then we will call the education officer on the number put up on the board. If they don’t address our concerns, then we can call on ministry’s helpline number. This new step will ensure transparency and provide us with an accurate picture of the admission process’.

Ashok Aggarwal, social jurist, speaking on the order, said, ‘It is a good order. I welcome the step initiated by the Delhi government for the sake of the parents. This step will definitely help parents and may build transparency in the process of nursery admissions.’
