The income tax department has slapped Congress president Sonia Gandhi with a notice in the National Herald case. Reacting to the charge, Gandhi accused the government on Wednesday of ‘vindictiveness’ in the wake of this issue, asserting that such ‘political witch-hunting will only help us come back.’
The Congress chief, her son and party vice-president Rahul and some other senior party functionaries, who are facing court summons in the case related to the allegedly illegal takeover of party mouthpiece National Herald, will now have to undergo income tax scrutiny.
Not only the I-T exemption enjoyed by National Herald may be withdrawn if the department is convinced the purpose for which it had been set up is not being fulfilled, but any change of trustees, if intended for indirect transfer of property, could lead to dissolution of the trust and the government may initiate appropriate proceedings, sources said. ‘Income tax notice in National Herald case is political vindictiveness. political witch hunt will only help us come back and fight harder’, Gandhi told a news channel.
Confirming that AICC had received the notice on Tuesday, Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said, ‘This notice and earlier procedures are going to be given vigorous, robust and comprehensive reply. A befitting reply.’ He also alleged that it was a glaring example of absolute vendetta politics and shows the fear and insecurity of the newly-elected government.
