Delhi police, which is investigating the mysterious death of Sunanda Pushkar, wife of former union minister Shashi Tharoor, is now under the scanner after the controversial rejoinder filed by Dr Sudhir Gupta, head of forensic department, in the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), alleging that he was being pressurised to tailor the autopsy reports.
‘For the last five and a half months, Delhi police is probing the case but has not made any headway. Rather, they were taking refuge in the contradiction between the autopsy report and the viscera reports,’ a source said. Viscera samples were preserved after the autopsy at AIIMS and were sent to the Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory (CFSL) for further tests.
‘The Vicsera report in this case came within two months of the death of Sunanda, which is much faster than the time CFSL takes in giving reports in other cases. Further, the report ruled out the poisoning or overdose of Alprax, though the autopsy and circumstantial evidences indicate towards it,’ the source added. A day after AIIMS authorities rejected the claims made by Dr Sudhir Gupta, head of forensic department, that he was being pressurised to tailor-make the autopsy report, Dr Gupta stuck to his assertions made in the affidavit.
On Thursday, he said pressure was brought on him to manipulate the postmortem report following the guidelines of the emails exchanged between Tharoor and one Dr. Rajiv Bhasin. The emails, he said, drew attention to Dr MC Mishra, AIIMS director who held several unnecessary meetings, as mentioned in the rejoinder filed in the CAT to influence Dr Gupta to doctor the reports.
The autopsy report claimed: ‘Sunanda died due to unnatural poisoning leading to her sudden unnatural death. A dozen injury marks on Sunanda’s both hands and an abrasion on her cheek which suggests “use of blunt force”, besides a “deep teeth bite” on the edge of her left palm’. Dr. Gupta added, ‘I stand by what I said. How do they (AIIMS spokespersons) know there is no pressure on me? Who were they to clarify that there is no pressure on me? What was the hurry to call a press conference?’ He said all his reports are bonafide.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy wrote a letter to PM Narendra Modi demanding that a SIT be set up under the CBI with not only IB and R&AW nominees but also people from the Enforcement Directorate. The letter reads, ‘The FIR registered in this matter has not yet been acted upon and a final report has yet to be filed despite the lapse of so much time.’
