‘Not headmaster, I am hard taskmaster’

Millions of students across the country heard him through live telecast with Modi stressing that ‘teachers are role models for students and society needs to realise their importance.’

Addressing students through a function in Delhi, Modi said there is a global need for good teachers and India has the potential to export good teachers to fulfill that need. He also fielded questions put to him by students and narrated anecdotes during the interaction, where he admitted, ‘I am a taskmaster. But it’s not like I don’t work hard myself.’

‘Work hard, play hard and sweat a lot at least four times a day,’ Modi told 700 children gathered at Manekshaw auditorium and the many more who had tuned in from across the country. He also stressed on the importance of technology, cautioning: ‘These days all the work is done by Google guru (the search engine). It provides information but not knowledge.’ During the 100-minute programme, which was linked with schools nationwide, he advised children to make reading a habit and read biographies as it will take them close to history.

Modi emphasised the need for a young nation like India to produce many more good teachers than it does. ‘Why can’t we think of exporting good teachers? Why don’t our students want to become teachers these days?’ he asked.

The prime minister stressed on girls’ education. He spoke on the need for separate toilets for girls in schools across the country and said lack of toilets in schools is the main reason for their drop out. He said there is need to make cleanliness a national movement. Replying to a question from a student, Modi said digital India is his dream and modern technology should reach all people in the country in all languages.

Over one thousand students from different schools in the national capital attended the function. Over 18 lakh government and private schools in the country participated in the event.
