Not enough teachers in Delhi’s leading varsities!

The survey conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC), has revealed that Delhi University has the largest number of vacant positions. The posts of professor, assistant professor and associate professor in various departments haven’t been filled.

The survey says that DU has 953 vacant positions, which include 150 professors, 383 associate professors and 420 assistant professors.

When sought for an opinion Alka Sharma, registrar, DU, said that the process of filling up vacant positions has begun. ‘We have started the recruitment process for the various posts and it will take time to fill these vacant positions. 65 colleges are running under DU’, said Sharma.

Followed by DU, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has 299 positions lying vacant at various levels, which include 89 professors, 127 associate professors and 83 assistant professors.

SK Sopory, JNU vice-chancellor said, ‘We are regularly recruiting teachers but simultaneously more teachers are heading towards retirement. There are a lot of reasons for vacant positions. Many times applications are not filled in a correct manner and usually we don’t get suitable candidates.’

‘In the last one and half years we had 156 selection committees. We are trying to fill these vacant positions, as much as we can and whenever suitable candidates are available’, he added.
At Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University, there are 106 positions vacant, which include 35 professors, 27 associate professors and 44 assistant professors.

SM Sajid, acting vice-chancellor, JMI, said, ‘In the past six months I have put up the recruitment process, as my position hasn’t been made permanent and therefore it isn’t appropriate to go ahead with it. And many times in reserved categories, we do not get enough applicants to fill up these positions’.
