North Delhi Municipal Commissioner, Praveen Gupta on Wednesday emphasised upon the need of preventive measures to prevent mosquito borne diseases like dengue and chikungunya. The commissioner also asked deputy health officers of all the six zones to monitor the anti- mosquito breeding programmes in their respective zones.
“There is no medicine or treatment for dengue and chikungunya. We can only prevent it, so it is very important to ensure its prevention by checking the breeding of mosquitoes in the house, building complexes or its surroundings. The life cycle of the Aedes-egypti mosquito is of about seven to eight days, if we break it mid-way by just changing stored water once in a week, the breeding can be checked,” said Gupta, directing the officers to expedite preventive measures and issue challans wherever breeding is detected.
He further added that attention needs to be paid to the work places as well as residential areas as far as prevention of dengue and malaria is concerned.
The Commissioner said that mosquito breeding in offices and work places is a serious concern and so citizens’ cooperation is essential in checking the breeding of the mosquitoes.
He also informed that checking mosquito breeding and a weekly anti-larval programme would be conducted, wherever water is stagnant. Also 1300 domestic breeding checkers in houses would be engaged.
Gupta also appealed to the administrative heads of all government and autonomous body offices, educational institutions, commercial establishments, market associations as well as citizens to initiate suitable steps to prevent mosquito breeding.
