With increasing reports on the damage of standing crops due to unprecedented rains across the country this week, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation has demanded adequate compensation for farmers of the Capital.
The Corporation, after passing a resolution, appealed to the state government as well as the Centre to pay immediate attention towards the issue and to ensure relief to the farmers. As per reports, more than 80 per cent of the crops in the Capital have been damaged leaving nearly five lakh farmers in trouble.
The farmers from almost 200 villages under the North and South MCD have suffered a loss worth crores of rupees due to the incessant rains at the very beginning of the month. They have incurred a minimum loss of Rs 20,000 per hectare. The rains have not only damaged the standing crops in one lakh hectares of land, but have put the next crops in danger too.
“With the heavy rainfall this week, farmers have suffered losses ranging from Rs 20,000 to a few lakhs. As the majority of peasants are dependent on loans or borrowed money, they have suffered lot. If their losses are not compensated, it will be a troublesome situation,” said MP Bhardwaj, chairman of Standing Committee, North MCD.
