North MCD Commissioner orders demolition drive

In view of increasing risk from earthquakes, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (North MCD) has initiated special demolition drive against illegal constructions.

In a special drive that will be conducted every Saturday, North MCD has decided to conduct random checks in all areas under its ambit to stop encroachment sites. The North MCD officials have announced to go on surprise visits for detection of unauthorised constructions so that action may be taken at the ongoing stage and no such construction be allowed to come up.

“Delhi is a high-seismic zone and prone to high-intensity earthquake. In that situation, it becomes very important to curb illegal constructions from safety point-of-view specially in densely populated areas. The special demolition drive would be conducted on Saturdays,” said Praveen Kumar Gupta, Commissioner of North MCD. He also directed the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) of all six zones to adopt zero-tolerance approach and take strict action against unauthorised constructions and encroachments on public land.

The DCs have been directed to conduct a special demolition drive from Saturday, after conducting random surveys by field engineers in all wards. The Commissioner has suggested that ward-wise teams may be constituted for detection of unauthorised constructions so that action against the same may be taken immediately.

A Corporation official said in consonance with the above direction, illegally constructed portions of properties, mostly commercial in the area of Sukhlal Market, Pitampura Pepsi Rood, Himgiri Enclave, behind Aimstock Convent School, Sant Nagar, Burari, Azadour Mandi, Sarai Pipal Thala, Majlis Park, Sanjay Nagar, Ram Pura and Malka Ganj were demolished.
