North, East DMC demands over Rs 14 crore tax from Delhi police

Blaming Delhi police of huge service tax evasion, the civic bodies are scrutinising the tax liabilities of various police stations and properties of Delhi police retrospectively. So far the two civic bodies, North DMC and East DMC, have demanded that Delhi police submits over Rs 14.16 crore outstanding of service tax for the period between 2004-05 to 2012-13, while the South DMC is yet to start srutinising its dues.

'We have sent a demand order of Rs 7.94 crore of service tax to Delhi police. The service tax assessment of some of the police stations and properties of Delhi police in the North DMC area is in progress,' said MSA Khan, additional commissioner (Revenue) of North Delhi Municipal Corporation (North DMC), who has scrutinised the tax liabilities of most of the properties of Delhi police in the area.

The maximum tax liability on a single property in North DMC has been estimated as Rs 4.55 crore for the New Police Line at Kingsway Camp in Civil Lines area. The list of defaulting properties include over 40 police stations, police welfare centre and family hospital, residential complexes, and offices of deputy commissioners of police (DCPs).

East Delhi Municipal Corporation (East DMC) has also placed a demand for over Rs 6.22 crore of service tax to the Delhi police, of which the maximum of Rs 5.98 crore outstanding tax is for the Police Training School Complex in Wazirabad.

'In a recent assessment order of the training school, we have demanded over six crore rupees as service tax but Delhi police could deposit only Rs 1,96,425,' said Alka R Sharma, assessor and collector of East DMC. Sharma further said that another demand of Rs 11.45 lakh against Delhi Police Public School and Rs 12.54 lakh against Delhi Police VIII Batalion has been issued to Delhi police for which they never submitted any service tax.

'We are scrutinising the tax liabilities for various properties of Delhi police in the East DMC area- east district and north-east districts of Delhi police,' added Sharma.

As per records east district had deposited over Rs 21.69 lakh and north-east district deposited Rs 7.78 lakh as service tax in 2012-13.

Delhi police, however deposited over Rs 19.83 lakh to South DMC as service tax for the period 2012-13 against its properties in the area but the corporation has ordered a scrutiny.
