North DMC issues property tax notice to Asaram’s Karol Bagh ashram

The North Delhi Municipal Corporation has issued property tax notices to Asaram’s ashram situated in the city’s Karolbagh area.

According to officers of the department, ashram representatives have never submitted property tax. Interestingly, the department has neither any record to calculate tax liability nor is aware of the exact amount pending. ‘A notice has been issued to the ashram to submit property tax from the financial year 2004-05 onwards on self assessment basis. An assessment order to calculate tax liabilities has also been passed,’ said MSA Khan, additional commissioner of North DMC,’ said MSA Khan, additional commissioner of North DMC.

The corporation has asked an ashram representative to appear before it on 12 September for hearing in the matter. ‘We don’t know exactly how many properties are registered in the name of the ashram. I have ordered all of them to be identified and tax notices will be issued,’ added Khan. The civic body has also written to the Delhi Development Authority to investigate whether the ashram has been illegally constructed. According to the department, the ashram spread on over three acres of land on Vande Matram Marg near Pusa Road was constructed around five years back. South DMC is also planning to issue tax notices to another of Asaram’s ashrams.
