Dengue took its first toll in the city with the death of a 26-year-old. The mosquito-borne disease killed a daily wage employee of North Delhi Municipal Corporation, deployed to prevent mosquito breeding in his area and create awareness among people against dengue and malaria. However, the corporation has not officially confirmed the cause of the death yet.
Tarun, a domestic breeder checker (DBC) employed by the North DMC was admitted at the Max Hospital in Shalimar Bagh after being referred by a local doctor last Thursday and breathed his last on Sunday afternoon. The officers of the municipal corporation are, however, trying their best to cover up the matter. The death is not reported in the weekly report on dengue released on Monday.
According to sources in the Max Hospital they have sent the report to the municipal corporation of Delhi on Monday but the health officers of the corporation have not confirmed it. 'As per my information there is no death due to dengue in the city so far. I talked to the municipal health officer (MHO) but he denied any such information,' said the spokesperson of North DMC.
'We have deployed DBC workers to find out mosquito breeding places and destroy them. We are also creating public awareness against mosquito borne,'said Azad Singh, mayor of North DMC.
The city has recorded 142 dengue cases in August this year, as against only four during the same period in 2012. Among the 142 dencases, 66 were reported in the last week of August. Thirty of these were reported from the North DMC area followed by 19 in the South DMC area and 10 in east Delhi.
