Cutting across party lines, councillors in the North Delhi Municipal Corporation have alleged a nexus between officers of the corporation and parking mafia. They have demanded installation of CCTV cameras and maps of the parking sites clearly mentioning the details of the contractor to curb illegal parking in the city.
‘It’s shocking to see that despite clear direction to curb illegal parking in the city, the officers have not taken any action. We have been raising the issue in the past meetings of the house but they never bother,’ said Ram Kishan Singhal, chairman of Standing Committee in North DMC.
He went on to say that the officers who don’t want to work must go to their parent cadre. The corporation has 116 legal surface parking sites in the city.
The number of illegal parking sites outnumber the legal parking sites, alleged councillors in the meeting of the house.
Singhal further said only five persons are holding the parking sites in the city through dubious contractors. ‘I myself had raised the issue of over-charging by the parking contractors and even submitted duplicate slips used by these parking mafias to fleece the public but no action has been taken so far,’ said
Mukesh Goel, leader of opposition in North DMC. Former mayor Rajni Abbi also said the parking mafias are creating a ruckus in the city and they even don’t regard councillors. Councillor Rajesh Bhatia said the contractors sublet the contract to small contractors which is not permitted in the law.
The mayor, Azad Singh directed the officers to speed up action and curb illegal parking in the city.
