The menace of dogs in Delhi could be assessed by the fact that 31,608 people were bitten by dogs from April 2012 to February 2013 just in North DMC area. Of which, nine patients have died.
However, the corporation do not have the exact number of stray dogs in the area. An NGO, HSI-India, is being hired for the census of dogs.
‘The actual expense of the corporation on sterilisation of dogs comes over Rs 4,500 per dog if we include the expenditure on staff and operational cost of the department,’ said Mahender Nagpal, leader of the house of North DMC when the issue came up for discussion. He further said that the policy of the department is not effective as the city don’t have any ‘dog house’ to keep the dogs captured.
‘As per the policy the castrated dogs are set free in the same area which waters down the entire effort,’ added Nagpal.
According to the data with the department, there are around 1.35 to 1.50 lakh dogs in North DMC area.
This is despite the fact that the local civic body pays Rs 445 per dog to the NGOs for the sterilisation of dogs.
Again, as per the records with the corporation, around 3,859 dogs were caught by the veterinary department of the corporation and were handed over to NGOs for sterilisation and vaccination. ‘We catch over 15 dogs per day and hand them over to NGOs for sterilisation,’ said a senior officer of the corporation. The corporation has 46 employees and 10 vehicles and four NGOs for this work.
In addition to the dogss, the corporation also pays Rs 600 per monkey to catchers and has engaged four NGOs for the work.
