Laptops have become a mere accessory for most councillors in the North DMC as they don't know how to operate them. The councillors have now demanded that the municipal commissioner provide them operators for laptops, on the corporation’s expense. If approved, the three civic bodies will collectively employ 270 computer operators, out of which 90 would be women as one third of councillors in Delhi are women.
'I can't operate the laptop and my son operates it,' said Rajkumari, a former sanitary worker of the MCD who is now a councillor. There are hardly 30-40 councillors in the corporation who can operate laptops and only about a dozen can use it for official purpose. 'The laptops for majority of councillors have become a tool to play video games and view films. Thus, the very purpose of providing laptops has been defeated,' said Mahender Nagpal, leader of house in North DMC.
The corporation had recently provided laptops to all its 104 councillors to keep records of development and necessary data but as over half of the councillors are unable to operate it properly for record-keeping and using necessary software, the public money used to provide the facility has gone in vain. A similar view was also echoed by Congress councillors in the meeting of the House on Monday.
'The laptops are of no official use in the absence of laptop operators. Delhi government bears the cost of operators for MLAs, so the corporation should also bear the cost,' said Mukesh Goel, leader of opposition in North DMC.
