Noida to be alive after 7 pm after all

The brewing protests from all corners have forced the Uttar Pradesh government to cancel its draconian order of compulsory closure of malls, shopping complexes and shops by 7 pm for 15 days from Monday. As the news of withdrawal reached Noida, businessmen, traders and office-goers let a sigh of relief.

‘The principal secretary of labour department Shailesh Krishna called on my mobile at 6 pm to inform me that the order for closure of malls, shopping complexes and shops in the city has been cancelled with immediate effect hence no need to implement it,’ said Atal Kumar, Deputy Labour Commissioner, Gautam Buddha Nagar district [Noida]. The new order came just an hour before the deadline to implement the shut down, as per the order issued on Sunday. The conflicting statements of Uttar Pradesh ministers started pouring out since afternoon, which ended with the cancellation of the previous order by evening.

Earlier, the day was tense and hectic for the officials of Noida labour and power department, the police and the administration. The order to close malls, shopping complex and shops by 7 pm reached the labour department via fax at around 12.30 pm. The officials had then called for an emergency meeting and created five teams under inspector level officers to implement the order. It was decided to issue challans to those found open after 7 pm.

The officials of Pashimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd [PVVNL] were also informed to call up their engineers to force the malls in their respective areas to shutdown by 7 pm. ‘We just received the order through fax so we don’t have enough time to hold meetings. We issued direction to our engineers on their mobile phones,’ said C L Gupta, Executive Engineer of the PVVNL.

The police chief was also alerted to make appropriate arrangements to avert any crisis.

‘We welcome the new order. It’s a good step in public interest,’ said Archana Browne, VP [sales and marketing ], GIP in Sector 37 of Noida. The shop owners in upmarket Sector 18 in Noida stopped protesting after they heard about the cancellation of closure order. ‘The government has taken a wise decision to withdraw the decision. There was no immediate crisis to issue such an order. The government should focus on increasing power production and creating infrastructure for it,’ said S K Jain, president of Sector 18 Market Association and district president of Udyog Vypar Mandal in Noida.

According to the original order, commercial establishments, barring pharmacies, were to open at 11 am and close at 7 pm for the next 15 days.

Restaurants were to operate between 11 am and 10 pm. Decorative lighting were also banned after 8.30 pm; power connection to be snapped in case of violation. Steel furnace and rolling mills, which consume a lot of power were to remain closed till further orders and street lights were to be switched on between 8 pm and 4.30 am only.
