The much awaited underpass which would cut travel time between Noida and South Delhi from over half an hour to five minutes will be thrown open for the public on Tuesday. According to Delhi Development Authority, Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu will cut the ribbon of the Rs 300 crore underpass which was completed in over six years.
According to DDA sources, a letter has been shot up to Urban Development Ministry for inauguration of the underpass on December 16. This project was planned in 2008, running behind schedule and construction work hung at loggerheads between Northern Railway and DDA. The latter has blamed the Northern Railway for the delay.
At first, DDA faced problems trying to get clearances, and when it started work it ran into problems with the Northern Railway department. In May this year, NR, which was responsible for digging underneath the existing railway lines, declared its share of the work had been completed. DDA subsequently promised to finish the work in another three months.
The 1.2 km underpass will reduce the distance between Okhla Industrial Area and Kalindi Kunj from 9 km to 1 km. Now, commuters will be able to save their precious time and fuel.
Cyclists and pedestrians will also be able to use this underpass. According to Norther Railway spokesperson, the work below the railway tracks has been executed without disrupting the rail traffic. The proposed underpass crosses the busy Delhi-Mumbai rail route used by 300 trains a day.
