Noida police now on Facebook

Tech hub Noida is finally making its way into the virtual world. In an effort to reach out to the citizens and strengthen police intelligence, Noida police has decided to launch a dedicated Facebook page to receive inputs or suggestions to control crime in the city.

'You can upload pictures or video clips regarding miscreants, illegal activities or the potential risk you encounter or things going on in your vicinity. These will serve as an input for the police. We will deploy a dedicated team to the page and refer it to concerned officials for quick action,' said Praveen Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Noida.

'Time-bound response and action strategy will also be drafted in order to gain the confidence of people,' added Kumar. The police chief is concerned about weak intelligence of his force and hopes that the citizens' inputs will be helpful in curbing crime in the city.

'People are busy with their lives and avoid sharing information with the police. But they are quite active on Facebook. Moreover, there is fear of their identity being revealed,' added Kumar. Noida Police already has a dedicated Facebook page to aware youngsters and netizens of Noida about traffic rules, traffic drives and traffic diversions in the city. 'This initiative on traffic has been quite popular in Noida and Greater Noida. We receive several inputs regarding traffic jams in Noida and Greater Noida which helps us manage the traffic in a better way,' said Krishan Bahadur, SP Traffic in Noida.

'People can access Facebook on their mobiles also, so they can easily send their inputs to us which will be of great use in containing crime in the city,' added Kumar. A sub-inspector level officer is likely to head the response team in the SSP office in Noida.

'Facebook will be quite useful in curbing crime against women. They can easily send pictures of stalkers or eve-teasers without revealing their identity. We will ensure quick action in such cases,' said Yogesh Singh, SP City, Noida. The police department is also planning to redesign its website to make it more interactive and hold public meetings at police stations to connect with people for valuable inputs.
